Garner, Affleck in high asset divorce

Movie fans the world over were shocked last year when noted stars Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced their intention to separate after 10 years of marriage and three children. British Columbia fans may have heard the high asset divorce was filed in Los Angeles in April, two years after the couple initially announced their plan to separate. Thankfully, it appears there is little acrimony between the two parties, who are working together to co-parent their minor children.

The couple's divorce filings were almost identical, and both filed "in propria persona," which means neither was represented by an attorney at the time of filing. The couple have agreed to keep any of their individual earnings between June 2015 and today separate, meaning those assets will be treated as non-marital and will revert to their original owners when the divorce is finalized. The couple is also working on hammering out a child custody agreement that will provide both of them with joint custody of their 11-year-old and 8-year-old daughters as well as their 5-year-old son.

The couple have cited irreconcilable differences as the primary reason for their split. They have also publicly committed to raising their children jointly, and have asked for privacy during their divorce. The process is ongoing at this time as the couple determines how their marital assets will be split.

It is buoying to think of the Garner/Affleck divorce as being reasonably amicable in light of the couple having three children together. For many people engaged in a high asset divorce, the road can be considerably more difficult. British Columbia residents dealing with a divorce in which considerable assets are to be divided may benefit strongly from the support of experienced divorce attorneys in handling the negotiations and any related court proceedings.
