Family law experts coin January as "divorce month"

The holidays can be a stressful time for the most cohesive of family units, but this is doubly true for families in which spouses are headed for a divorce. The end of the holidays here in British Columbia and elsewhere in the world marks the beginning of what many family law experts are calling "divorce month" since so many people choose to wait through the season to begin this process. Thankfully, when the decision is made, there is a variety of support available to both spouses.

There are many reasons why a couple might choose to forgo the onset of their divorce proceedings until after the decorations come down. For spouses with children, the answer is fairly obvious: no one wants to ruin the holidays for their children. This can be equally true for childless couples who may not want to interfere with the plans of family and friends during the season.

Once the season has passed, however, many attorneys report their phones ringing off the hook. Unhappy couples are eager to begin the divorce process, hence January being informally termed divorce month. In fact, in the United Kingdom, some refer to "Divorce Day" as the first Monday in January following the end of the holiday break.

For unhappy couples, the holidays can seem nearly an insurmountable obstacle. However, no matter when the couple chooses to begin their divorce, there are family law options available to them. Here in British Columbia, both spouses can secure the support of experienced divorce attorneys to help them through this sometimes tumultuous process.
